As a small, self-funded business, we typically don’t have much free time. We haven’t had time to be concerned about awards or trying to get coverage on popular blogs, and we haven’t had time to attend popular conferences and trade shows. Any “free” time we have we tend to spend working on the product. Awards and conferences don’t help our current users – that’s been our mindset. I guess you could also argue that what BSA does isn’t actually all that exciting… it just works, the business model is very obvious, and we’re not trying to grow the company 100x in a year with millions of funding. We’re just pushing along, growing at a comfortable rate, and solving for our current users vs. the ones we don’t have. That’s what works for us.
As far as awards go, the MITX awards are an exception to the rule, they’re special. Partly because they are local here to us here in Boston, but mostly because just being a finalist is a strong validation from very smart people. It’s not a popularity contest, either – the MITX appointed judges decide who is a finalist, not the company with the most users willing to vote. And, my favorite part, is that we’re on a level playing field up against companies with millions in venture funding. Everybody loves an “underdog”. The awards show is on June 2nd here in Boston. If there are any BSA users here in Boston that would like to attend with us, please let me know by the end of this week at the latest (email me at todd _at_ buysellads.com).
If you would like to learn more about MITX & the other finalists, here’s where to go: http://www.mitxawards.org/technology/Finalists.aspx. If we don’t win, it’s not the end of the world. Being a finalist is already pretty exciting for us. We’ll let you know how we do come June 3rd!
