Selling ads in desktop applications

Over the last two months we started to receive an increasing number of requests from companies who wanted to use BSA to sell ads in their desktop applications. We said, “Sure, why not?”. I’m happy to report, that two companies are now successfully selling ads via BSA in their desktop applications. This is pretty cool.

Who are they?

One is a Mac app, and the other is a Windows/Mac/Linux app.

AppBodega is like a corner store for Mac apps. Like all Mac apps it has a very slick interface and is a great way for discovering useful apps for your Mac. Visit AppBodega’s Buy Now Page.

Woopra is a hosted analytics service for bloggers. It is similar to Google Analytics but provides real time stats and a number of additional features, such as the ability to chat real time with visitors to the site. Visit Woopra’s Buy Now Page.

How do the ads perform?

Surprisingly well. Certainly, it depends on their size, position, and how they are integrated into the app, but overall these two apps are seeing extremely high click-through rates (like, “WOW!”, click-through rates).

The Integration

The integration is not copy and paste like it is for a website; however, both apps were able to get up and running fairly easily and without any documentation. We will have formal docs prepared for this shortly and are also working to provide frameworks for developers to make the integration more plug-and-play. So, why the pre-mature announcement if we don’t have any docs/frameworks ready to go yet? We want to start the conversation. If you have a desktop app and would like to sell some classy ads, get in touch.

I was 100% sure when Woopra contacted us (and I grabbed the ticket first!) the whole partnership is going to be a successful one :)

    Cool stuff guys!

That’s two new (to me) things in one day – BSA in desktop apps and Fusion’s Touch network.

…might need to update my latest Netsetter articles ;)

iPad/iPod/iTouch aren’t too far behind once we have the other frameworks in place. fun stuff :)

Yep, majorly fun. Desktop and iPod Touch have been two platforms that I might like the option of running ads on in the future. Ever since I say Fusion Ads in Tweetie for Mac, I thought desktop advertising was an interesting idea.

I will say, this is a fantastic idea. I’ve been thinking about this for a while and have been interested in this, although I don’t currently run any desktop apps…

    Hi,
Recently started using BSA to sell ads and have successfully been integrating inside the Smart Installer Pack 1.5 software (www.smartinstallerpack.com). I have to say this is an excellent solution to monetize desktop apps.
    Thank you BSA!
