    All very fascinating. We’ve all been exposed to “act now” and “your friends will think you are cool” advertising. What’s missing from these stats is the age of the targets and its impact on loyalty for life. For example, cigarette companies like Camel targeted early teens with the Camel cartoon character. And if you were a kid in the 1970′s, Crests “Cavity Creeps” stick with you even today, and impact my very own purchases now – even though those ads have not been on the air for 30+ years.

    Great insights. But yes many of these tactics are beginning to lose steam owing to being overused. However, it all boils down to in which category you’re using it, what is the demographics of the target market, and also what time of the year you’re using it. For instance if you’re using the discount strategy at Christmas time when every advertiser is using it, it’s not going to get you much response.
